Photo Challenge: Danger

The danger of horses is not
their strength and power,
thrusting forward with a brilliant
heart, ribboned with intelligence,

clean and authentic and never
quite under our control.
It isn’t our earthbound worries
or the fear of injury. The danger

of horses is that we will fall short
of their vulnerability; fall short
of their wild beauty. The danger is
that we may never feel that free.

  1. Beautiful. Maybe that is why we pretended we were horses as little girls. Manes blowing in the wind and high pitched whinnies. I think I still go there in my dreams. I am volunteering at a local new “rescue.” It is one of those new startups. The learning curve and growing pains are painful to watch. I am lucky. I get to just hang with the horses, brushing whoever is interested. One of the very few benefits to being “older.” It gives me an opportunity to practice paying attention. Observing myself as well as them. I am hoping to be less the predator in my body language with them as well as with my own horses. Is this the way to freedom for us all?

  2. I was transfixed by your photograph and your words. Thank you. Whenever I am with my dear horse and even more so when I ride him I feel wild and free like a child, with a huge smile on my face and in my heart, and I thank him carrying me with care. I only ask him for what he can and is willing to give and when I am not with him, he lives happily out with his herd.

    • I will forever marvel at this feeling horses give us when we ride, when we stand next to them, even when we see a photo. Thanks Charlotte. Give your horse a scratch for me.

  3. Oh and I forgot to add that there are goats too!!! And donkeys. They are wonderful. I am so blessed. One of the goats likes to follow me around and she empties my bucket of grooming tools at every groom stop. I think I am the one being rescued.
