Walking the washout, high desert
ground between pond silt and
prairie pasture, I know to look
for crushed cans, bits of barbed
wire, and runaway fence staples.Only to find you crouched,
invisible and silent, refusing to
see me even as I bend close. Not
a blink of eye, so wildly strong.
So committed to life as to playdead. Brave hatchling, as you grow
you will find your voice, singing out
your name, race-walking in a stilted
gait, an undeniable citizen of this
pond. Too often humans lose voice, fearing it won’t be missed in the
din and flap of a chaotic world,
forgetting the indisputable power
of a single call, clear and true,
to lift the quality of the very air.

I’m so loving your poetry Anna. Thank you!
Thank you, Andrea. I’m getting more comfortable with fewer words… not a natural skill for me. 🙂
Would that we don’t lose our foothold as we make room for the hatchlings. Thanks, Anna. I needed this today.
Indeed, I saw him at the last… Thanks, Lynell.
Really beautiful…thank you, Anna.
Love this!
Thanks, Nancy. Have a great holiday.
Beautifully said. As I get older I find comfort in blending in with my surroundings a bit. This is a good reminder to never give up. Thank you. Your poetry is wonderful.
Thanks, Judy. Sometimes it’s enough to shout, “I’m not dead yet!” (I notice)
Loved your poetry. I think it had a greater impact because we have several of those amazing birds in our pasture. I am always worried the horses are going to inadvertently step on them or their nest. Just saw two little ones yesterday running back to their mother (or father) . Everyone was OK for the moment. Love ya!
Thanks, Fred… and I know there is a circle to life, but I cleared a horse out of his run this week, for a baby bird. Can’t save ’em all, but it’s sweet when it works.
Love this. Thank you.
Thanks for telling me… I appreciate it.
I really love to watch a killdeer too ??✌️
and their song, too… Thank you.
Dear Anna, your work so often brings tears of recognition of the beauty that you impart with your lovely words. Please continue this beautiful gift to the world that you are! Thank you for being you!
Thanks, Alice. (Gotta love words…)
Wow! That’s all I can come up with. This is beautiful. Thank you!
Thanks, Lyn. And I’m keeping my eyes on my feet.
