This willful mare will not be owned.
She makes choices; her neck softens
lower as she turns her ear to me.She smells so familiar that I think
it might be my own scent, remembered
by those who knew me lifetimes ago. Then the horizon blurs, retreating
as the sky lifts us high enough
to trot the shoulders of the moon.

(WordPress Photo Challenge is a weekly prompt to share a photo–I enjoy twisting these macro prompts to share our micro life here on the Colorado prairie. I take these photos with my phone, on my farm. No psych, definitely not high-tech.)
I am new to this blog – I am not sure how or how to respond.
This worked! Welcome, Elizabeth.
Anna, are these your words?! Love them and the photo.
As much as anyone can own words, these are mine. Thank you Barbara.
Yes
Thanks.
Love this so much, Anna. It was explained to me once that mares are “opinionated.” I like that. You’re allowed to have an opinion. My mare’s expression of an opinion is a tail swish and a foot stomp. All other expression comes through her soft eye and relaxed lower lip that looks amazingly like a smile. (I do wish she’d double-barrel the boys sometimes though. They can be such bullies.)
Thanks, Kaylene… I can lend you a mare who doesn’t tolerate bullies…
Your words are beautiful Anna and so real I feel myself there with them! xx
Thanks, Karyn. My guess is that you have a mare.
Hmmmmm. I think this mare smells familiar to me as well. 🙂
Teehee. My sister-mare!
I, too, have a mare. A Morgan mare. They are known to be self-willed. Communicate with “the Morgan eye” or shark eye. Friends say we are alike. How fortunate for me! Wouldn’t change anything. She will be 30 on June 23rd. Been together for 28 years. What a life we have.
What a life, indeed. Hooray for your mare, smart enough to pick the right partner. Thanks, Marlene.
Beautiful photo
Thanks, Kate.
