It is wonderful to learn of the change in behavior that results from we humans being more present and breathing! I am so happy for you! Sounds like you are on a positive path…good for you calmly persisting!

I think it would be really fun to go to Nebraska for a clinic! I would participate as an auditor, and maybe could even work on getting a group together from Maine to go somewhere we’ve never been before! It could be a real adventure! Keep us posted!

    Hello!
My name is M.B. I live in Maine, with my husband, and our 2 dogs: Miles and Luke. My horse, Pi (π) is a 12-year-old intelligent, expressive, Paint gelding who resides at a wonderful dressage barn close to our home. Pi and I began our partnership about 1.5 years ago. He is teaching me so much! He is teaching me to be a more effective and tactful rider. He has also made it clear that he requires a different approach to communication than any other horse I have ever worked with.

I have been following the Relaxed and Forward blog for some time now, and have always appreciated Anna Blake’s perspective, sage words, and the wit that is shared in the blog. When calming signals started to be mentioned in the blog, I realized that this may be a major missing piece for us. The content of Anna Blake’s recent blog post entitled, “Calming Signals and Boundaries” really resonated with me. I became aware of the fact that Pi has been expressing many calming signals to me in hand that I haven’t been seeing…or maybe worse yet, I have been misreading his calming signals as misbehavior. I knew I needed to take immediate action to learn about calming signals in order to understand Pi (and all horses) better, and to help Pi live a happier, more peaceful life. I am currently reading Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses: Recognition and Application by Rachaël Draaisma, and I am a proud new member of “The Barn!” I am so excited to be a part of this! I have so much to learn. Looking forward to learning along with all of you.

    All the best,
    M.B.
