The dog watches me sit at the edge of the
bed pulling a frayed t-shirt over my head,
shoulders rounded with work not finished.
Pushing back, swinging my feet under the
covers and easing down to the pillow. Wet
whiskers at bedtime; her gray nose nudges
the quilt and she waits. Yes, I say. She lumbers
up and drops flush to my side. That sweet weight
of her head as she mumbles a satisfied moan.
It takes longer for my shoulders to lay down
the day but then, between the prairie grass and
the howling moon, my ribs go soft. Good girl.

Ah, the wonderful love of a dog at bedtime. Or, in my case, a large cat.
Cats work!
This is beautiful! Softness, vulnerability, great images.
Thank you.
I can so relate. 🙂
It’s a great tradition…
There is nothing as sweet, dependable & pure than the love of a dog.
Boy howdy, that’s the truth! Thanks for commenting.
I could recreate the feeling as I read the words…thank you for that. The warm weight of my sweet dog against my thigh serves as a conduit for the stress to flow out of my body and into my mattress every night.
An everyday miracle… thanks Candace.
My mistake. At first i thought we were getting out of bed, not getting in it. Now I see it makes sense, LOL!
Teehee. I like getting in better!
Perfect! Line by line, step by step, perfect!
Thank you, Jean. Hope you’re doing well.

Amen.
Oh yes can totally relate to this I love our little bedtime ritual with Annie -a little ‘dig’ at the duvet, a few turns and then that contented sigh …ahhh the love of a dog…priceless!!
I can so totally relate to this. I love our bedtime ritual with Annie, a few ‘digs’ at the duvet, a few turns, a sigh and all’s well in the world-snuggles with dogs….priceless!
Sigh… Sweet comment, Frances.
I don’t usually “get” poetry, but this one got me. Nice job.
Best comment ever! I don’t always get poetry either, and writing it is scary stuff. You made my day, thank you.
Same routine for me, but with my cat. Don’t fall asleep until she is snuggled in place at my left leg. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
Purring works too. Thanks, Marlene.
I like this one…really reeled me in.
Thanks, Susie. I’ve had a whole life sleeping with dogsto draw from. 🙂
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Beth!
