Photo Challenge: Heritage (with Doghair)

The dog watches me sit at the edge of the
bed pulling a frayed t-shirt over my head,
shoulders rounded with work not finished.
Pushing back, swinging my feet under the

covers and easing down to the pillow. Wet
whiskers at bedtime; her gray nose nudges
the quilt and she waits. Yes, I say. She lumbers
up and drops flush to my side. That sweet weight

of her head as she mumbles a satisfied moan.
It takes longer for my shoulders to lay down
the day but then, between the prairie grass and
the howling moon, my ribs go soft. Good girl.

  1. I could recreate the feeling as I read the words…thank you for that. The warm weight of my sweet dog against my thigh serves as a conduit for the stress to flow out of my body and into my mattress every night.

  2. My mistake. At first i thought we were getting out of bed, not getting in it. Now I see it makes sense, LOL!

    • Best comment ever! I don’t always get poetry either, and writing it is scary stuff. You made my day, thank you.

  5. Same routine for me, but with my cat. Don’t fall asleep until she is snuggled in place at my left leg. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
