Photo Challenge: Unusual

It’s not unusual to feel still
air rush over your cheeks and
past your ears. It’s you moving
forward in a bold waltz rhythm
that’s less domesticated than dance.

It’s perfectly normal to release
the earth and be held by intention
and hoof beats and a lesser degree
of gravity than what roots docile
human feet to mud and granite.

It’s the ordinary excellence of a
woman and a horse. Ribs expand as hips
surrender to the rolling impulsion,
closing your eyes just long enough to
feel the power in letting go. Canter out.

This blog is free, and it always will be. Free to read, but also free of ads because I turn away sponsorships and pay to keep ads off my site. I like to read a clean page and think you do too. If you appreciate the work I do, or if your horse does, consider making a donation.

  1. A nice thing to wake up to this morning, though I do not currently have this in my life. For now, the bicycle and my own footfalls suffice. But my heart longs. I truly treasure your posts, Anna.

  3. Words, like water can trickle or rush: clean the soul and renew the body or drown us in emotion so deep we lose our breath and float away, dead to what was, not yet born into what will be, yet feeling with every cell in our bodies. Horses do that, like words.

    Thank you,

  4. I think it may be wrong to ask you for more when what you already do with your poems and words has become so valuable to me. So first thank you. But I will ask I would love to have some of your photo challenges and poems available in prints to frame. I am reading them again and again and I think they deserve a more permanent display in my life.

    • Lynda… I write in a small room filled with dog beds and paper… it means more than I can say that my words land in some welcome place, so thank you. No plans for prints right now… but I am working on a book of poems. Thank you for your kind words. I’m working on it.
