Photo & Poem: Dark Solstice

Christmas lights are a poor
trade for the wildfire clouds
at dawn, iridescent light draining
the midnight purple fringe

from the sky. Jangling bells no
match for the cool haunting
notes echoing from the hawk
gliding circles above the frozen

pond. Obligatory wishes of the
season from the dentist, glitter
on paper, only mock the words
between us that sparkle, still

hanging in the frozen air. Just to
ask, on this longest dark night,
can you return, warm against my
side? I am so tired, missing you.
