to be someone else. We
each had a plan; it was

meant to go another way
but there was always a
stumble. We lost balance

and compromised, recycled
into this different plan
that fits like skin and teeth.

  5. Anna, Exemplary — every one of us in one way or another. Always on the path together.

    During the early 1970s, at 19, I was alone, having lost both parents. I walked down the street in London’s Shepherd Bush, past an Indian Deli which never seemed to close. I had only coins in my pocket and no food in the bedsit. It was cold, dark and foggy and I didn’t know if would make it to the next day. I decided to go into the little Indian deli in the hope of finding some small grocery item that would cover dinner and breakfast. I thought of porridge oats, but it was too much for my pocket.

    The Indian gentleman looked at me for a moment — in that brief still moment, he figured it all out, as I didn’t have a winter coat. He took a bag and put groceries in it, plus Cornflakes that I had been looking at. I was speechless. He wouldn’t take anything.

    Angels are always sent when we really need them.

    And we grow.

  6. I have been amazed at how my adoptees have transformed themselves in a simple atmosphere of caring and respect. I think that sometimes the second skin might fit better than the first.

  7. I am so touched reading the comments, not surprised at the heart though. But I did want to tell you what an astounding image, the fit of “skin and teeth”. At first it struck me as harsh and then immediately to the mutual comfort of it. I’ll be thinking of it throughout the day to help close the gap of how slow I am to animal think.

    • All species with teeth do well when they fit. I used to have a problem with my bite. 🙂 So it goes… I’m always fascinated with how a turn of words is heard through individual ears. Thanks, Joan.

    • Thank you, Karen. We do feel pretty lucky around here. (Edgar Rice Burro has his head pressed into the Grandfather Horse’s chest… that’s Lilith on the scratchin’ post.)
