Photo & Poem: Roots

There was a single elm on the short
path from the house to barn, its
trunk no larger than my leg. Wind
bruised its leaves before spring was

gone. Thin summer shade, spindly in
the fall, it cast no shadow in winter
light. A silent witness to seasons of
chores, fed by horse tanks drained

and cleaned, in return giving shade
to dogs, until their ashes one day rest
at its base. Branches grown strong
for a tire swing, then hanging chairs,

tired humans come to roost. Finally
pushing a dome of leaves so tall and
wide that all are sheltered, rooted
deep in the pulse of body and earth.

  1. You truly know the blessing of home when you’ve planted a tree and watched it grow old enough to give shade to the ones you love. Thank you, Anna.
